Where the Kvarner is and why it is worth a visit
The Kvarner bay is part of the northern Adriatic, sheltered by mountains and facing the islands of Krk, Cres and Lošinj. It combines an urban and cultural experience with the sea: in a single day you can stroll along the port-side Korzo in Rijeka, climb up to the Trsat fortress, and then relax on Opatija’s Lungomare promenade by the sea. The mild climate and lush greenery — parks, laurels and chestnuts — make the Kvarner pleasant even outside the peak of the season. Rijeka — a port town of culture
Croatia’s largest port and the country’s third city by population, Rijeka lies where the Rječina river flows into the Kvarner bay. The heart of the town is the Korzo promenade, and above it rises the medieval Trsat fortress with the shrine of Our Lady of Trsat, reached by the famous Petar Kružić staircase (561 steps, construction begun in 1531). Opatija — the oldest seaside resort
Opatija is the cradle of Croatian tourism — it began in 1844 with the building of Villa Angiolina, and in 1889 the town was proclaimed the first climatic seaside health resort on the Austrian Riviera. Along the sea stretches the Lungomare, a promenade about 12 km long from Volosko through Opatija to Lovran, and above the town rises Mount Učka. Beaches and swimming on the Kvarner
The Kvarner beaches are mostly pebbly or landscaped (concrete), with a clear sea. In Rijeka and nearby, Ploče and Kostanj stand out — both with a Blue Flag and access for people with disabilities — and Preluk, a favourite among windsurfing enthusiasts; in Opatija the central town beach is Slatina. The sea is warmest from June to September.

When to travel to the Kvarner
For swimming, the best period is July–August, while June and September are ideal for walks and sightseeing at pleasant temperatures. Thanks to the urban character of Rijeka and Opatija, the Kvarner is interesting in spring and autumn too — from the Rijeka Carnival in winter to the Marunada, the chestnut festival in nearby Lovran, every October.
