Rijeka or Opatija — a Kvarner Guide to the Sea 2026

NovaTravel team · · 7 min read

In short: Rijeka is a lively port city with culture and amenities, while Opatija is an elegant seaside resort with its Lungomare and villas — Rijeka for the urban buzz, Opatija for calm and charm; they are just 15 km apart.

Rijeka and Opatija are two faces of the Kvarner, just some fifteen kilometres apart, but of quite different character. Rijeka is a lively port and cultural centre, Opatija an elegant seaside resort with a long promenade. Both are among the parts of the Adriatic closest to Belgrade. In this guide we compare them, and if you are planning a Belgrade to Rijeka minibus transfer or a Belgrade to Opatija minibus transfer, how to get there is at the end.

Rijeka — the port, the Korzo and culture

Rijeka (transfer to Rijeka) is the third-largest city in Croatia and its main port. The town is dominated by the lively Korzo promenade, and above it, up the Petar Kružić staircase (561 steps), climbs the medieval Trsat fortress with a view of the bay. In 2020 Rijeka was European Capital of Culture, and its carnival is the largest in Croatia. In more detail in the guide Rijeka 2026.

Opatija — elegance and the Lungomare

Opatija (Belgrade to Opatija transfer) is the oldest seaside resort on the Croatian coast — tourism began as far back as 1844, and in 1889 it was proclaimed the first climatic seaside health resort. Along the sea stretches the 12 km long Lungomare promenade from Volosko through Opatija to Lovran, with parks from the Austro-Hungarian era and the “Maiden with the Seagull” statue. Above the town rises Mount Učka. More in the guide Opatija 2026.

Beaches and swimming

Both have mostly pebbly and landscaped town beaches. Along the Lungomare in Opatija there is a string of bathing areas and coves with ladders and access to the sea, while Rijeka has the town beaches of Ploče and Kostanj with a Blue Flag. For a wider choice of beaches, many combine the Kvarner with neighbouring Istria (Belgrade to Istria transfer).

Who Rijeka is for, who Opatija is for

  • Rijeka — if you love the urban rhythm, the port, culture and going out; a town that is alive out of season too.
  • Opatija — if you want quieter elegance, long walks by the sea, parks and coastal class.

As they are so close, it is best to see both — a day in Rijeka (Korzo, Trsat) and a day in Opatija (Lungomare, parks).

Closeness — the nearest part of the Adriatic

The Kvarner is among the parts of the Croatian coast closest to Belgrade: Rijeka is about 552 km away and Opatija about 565 km, with 7–8 hours of driving. That makes it ideal for shorter breaks and long weekends too.

How to get to the Kvarner from Belgrade

For both destinations we drive door to door, with a night departure from Belgrade (around 23:00h) and the Batrovci – Bajakovo border crossing, via Zagreb; you reach the coast in the morning.

The price is fixed and free of hidden costs — see the price for Rijeka, the price for Opatija or the whole price list, and we also drive to all the towns in the Kvarner (Belgrade to Kvarner transfer). Before the trip, check the border crossings and live cameras, and read about the region in the guide the Kvarner 2026.
