In short: in Platamon it is worth seeing the medieval Crusader castle (13th century) above the sandy bay, which dominates the entrance to the Tempi gorge; the beach is long and family-friendly.
Platamon is the only place on the Olympic Riviera where a medieval castle rises right above the beach. It sits at the entrance to the historic Tempi gorge, below Mount Olympus, so it combines the sea, history and nature in one place. In this guide we go through the beach, the castle, the excursions and why Platamon is worth it.
Beaches in Platamon
Akti Platamona is one of the longest beaches in Greece — long, with light sand and small shells, surrounded by pines. It flies a Blue Flag, and the shallow sea and gradual entry make it very suitable for families with children. Along the shore are sun loungers, parasols, beach bars and a choice of water sports, while the harbour with its fish restaurants gives the place a special charm.
What to see in Platamon and nearby
Platamon castle (kastro)
The most recognisable symbol of the place is the medieval castle from the 13th century (built between 1204 and 1222, in the era of the crusaders), on the site of the former ancient Herakleon. From the walls a view opens over the whole riviera and the sea, and a short climb above the place leads up to it — the visit is especially lovely in the late afternoon, at sunset.
The Tempi gorge
Platamon guards the entrance to the Tempi gorge, for centuries the main natural passage between Thessaly and Macedonia, through which the river Pinios flows. It is picturesque for an excursion and known for the little Church of St Paraskevi carved into the rock.
Excursions: Olympus, Dion and Meteora
Thanks to its position below Olympus, from Platamon it is easy to reach Mount Olympus (a national park and trails), archaeological Dion at the foot of the mountain, as well as the more distant Meteora. Within reach are other places of the Olympic Riviera (Belgrade to Olympic Riviera transfer) too, such as Leptokaria (Belgrade to Leptokaria transfer). More about the neighbouring places in the guides what to see in Leptokaria and Korinos.
Platamon for families and with children
The long beach with its shallow sea and gradual entry makes Platamon one of the more suitable places for a holiday with children on the riviera, and the castle and harbour also provide something for a walk and sightseeing. The railway station connects the place with Thessaloniki and Athens.
Where to eat and the harbour
In the harbour and along the promenade there is a string of fish restaurants and taverns with fresh fish and seafood, with a view of the boats and the sea. The evening is relaxed and family-friendly. The rough guide to prices in Greece 2026 helps you plan your budget in advance.
